Death Valley is a national park of a different flavor.  It’s a region of extremes… extreme temperatures… extreme geology… extreme history… extreme scenery. Death Valley National Park could be considered a rebel amongst Americas National Parks and caters to those who are looking for an escape from the ordinary, and a refuge from cold in winter.

Death Valley is most popular in autumn and winter months when the rest of the country is shivering under the icy chill of winter and a blanket of snow. Death Valley beckons ‘snow-birds’ from across the upper latitudes of north America with her dry desert climate and her persuasively mild temperatures.

Death Valley National Park is a large park, covering more than 3 million acres, roughly 1 1/2 times the size of Delaware.  It is also an area of extreme, albeit unusual scenic beauty and adventure.

Visitors flock to Death Valley throughout the year, but especially in the winter months, and recreational sports such as hiking, mountain biking and riding horseback are all popular activities inside the park.

Death Valley and the Mojave Dessert is home to more than 56 kinds of mammal, 36 species of reptile, several types of amphibians and fish species, and more than 400 unique species of birds have been spotted within the park.

Some of the variations of mammals include bighorn sheep, foxes, coyotes, squirrels, rodents, jackrabbits, bats and more.  All kinds of beautiful and interesting reptiles can be found here  such as the Chuckwalla, the second largest lizard found inside the United States. This interesting creature likes to hang out near rocky areas and will squeeze into rocky crevices and inflate itself when it feels threatened.  Or the desert horned lizard a moderately sized lizard with pointed scales that protrude from it’s head and body in the shape of horns.  Only the ‘horns’ on it’s head are rigid, the rest of the horn-like scales are soft and feel more like normal reptile skin.  One interesting thing about the horned lizard is it’s ability to shoot a stream of blood from the corner of it’s eyes when it is threatened by a predator.  This creates a distraction and allows the lizard an opportunity to escape.

Death Valley is also known for it’s many interesting ghost towns.   These colorful relics from Death Valley’s past were mostly mining towns that sprung up in the late 1800’s to mid 1900 when gold, silver and copper ore was found in the area. One of the most interesting of these ghost towns is the town of Panamint City.  This little town was short lived, but made up for it’s short life through its audacious reputation.  Panamint City was founded by two outlaws who were hiding-out from the law.  During their hiatus in the Panamint Mountains, these two lucky outlaws discovered silver in Surprise Canyon and subsequently decided to give up their life of crime for a more domestic lifestyle.  During it’s time, Panamint City was considered one of the toughest, rawest, most hard-boiled little hell-hole that ever passed for a civilized town.  However the fast life of Panamint City led to an early demise, as the city went from the height of it’s boom in 1874 to utter destruction from a flash flood just two years later in 1876.

You can also try Golf Fantasia, a popular mini-golf attraction set in a beautiful tropical garden environment. Chauffeur, a word with French roots may be used in reference to a person who drives other individuals for their errands by means of luxury car.

Most chauffeur services put a lot of emphasis on the standard of service they provide as well as the type of car. To begin with, the chauffeur service always opts for cars that will offer their customers the highest possible comfort on the road. Some examples of the vehicles that fit this description include a limousine, a Lamborghini as well as a sedan, all of which symbolize class, comfort, convenience, and power. Take a look at chauffeur service in london for real-life examples of some of the cars you can hire.

Usually the chauffeur service companies will have a selection of vehicles so the customer can make a choice. In addition to the fact that these vehicles are state of the art they are also well maintained and equipped with the most hi-tech features which any client may require during the trip.

Similarly the person behind the wheel is not only very well trained in matters of driving, but in personal etiquette as well. The people selected for chauffeur jobs must have sufficient experience on the road and on the vehicles they drive. This is necessary in order to attract and retain top notch customers.

If you have ever considered becoming a chauffeur you will need a couple of things.  An excellent driving record is a given because nobody will hire you if your record shows that you will put their vehicles and clients in danger.  You will need a fantastic personality.  You must be prepared and able to work with all sorts of people, be able to chat with them when they desire and also be able to shut up when they need privacy.  You’ll want to know your local area very well.  And above all, you will need to be able to honor people’s privacy.  What happens in a limo stays in the limo.  A chatty, rumor broadcasting chauffeur won’t last long in the business.

At many different places around the World, ticket prices seem to fluctuate significantly. It is actually possible to fly to many locations with a little help from the internet, at a very low price.

One of the key factors to finding a cheap flight deal is flexibility in departure dates. To save money airlines will slot people into empty seats, so if you’re willing to modify your dates to suit the airlines program, then you can benefit on their decision. The internet is the number one place to find the best airfare deals. Have a look at a review flight website like Virgin Cheap Travel. There are many airfare reviews of the major airlines helping you find the deal and pice of mind you need when booking.

You are more likely to find the best deals on airfares if you are a frequent flyer. The numerous ‘Frequent Flyer’ programs usually provide incentives for customer loyalty. Usually you will earn points as a regular flyer which can be exchanged for flight tickets of other goods.

Online is the best-known source for airfare deals. However, take care in booking with little known companies offering large discounts. {The problem is that people often have a hard time in confirming the legitimacy of these sites before they are committed to making a payment. It is very difficult to tell whether these sites are legitimate or not.} Try telephoning the booking of your flight or even visit their offices if they are local. Never rely on email contact as the only method to deal with a reputable company. Find out exactly which airline you have booked your flight with, that is important to know.

The number of cheap flight deals are increasing all the time and additional options are opening up daily.

Las Vegas shows

It may be hard to believe but few vacations can be cheaper than a well-planned Vegas travel excursion. If you’ve ever been to a casino, then you understand that they are willing to thank the patrons with free drinks, free food and bonus plays to keep you there, keep you happy and keep you spending money. Such is the case in Las Vegas Nevada, the gambling capital of the United States, although the frugal gamble-resistant traveler can also capitalize on these tremendous deals!

To find cheap Las Vegas travel airfare, your best bet is to check out the discount sites online, some of which are, www.hotwire.com, www.expedia.com, www.cheaptickets.com, www.priceline.com, www.kayak.com, www.travelocity.com, www.smartertravel.com, www.cheapoair.com and www.orbitz.com. The cheapest Las Vegas Nevada fares leave on Sunday and return on Wednesday or Thursday. The beauty of traveling to Vegas is the amount of free attractions and Las Vegas shows that are available. At The Bellagio Hotel, there is a magnificent indoor conservatory and an impressive outdoor “dancing fountain” show that is choreographed to music every 15-30 minutes. Similarly, the 54-foot-high volcano erupts at The Mirage every night, which is an impressive sight. The Sirens Battle at Treasure Island is good eye-candy for guys and may be cool for little ones, but will undoubtedly disappoint your “Pirates of the Caribbean” loving teen.

You can check out the lion display at MGM Grand and the flamingos at The Flamingo Hotel at no cost. Twelve million lights shine on Fremont Street, with a special display every 30 minutes. Circus Circus has acts every half hour as well, with hire wire walkers, clowns and magicians touring the building. Perhaps the best free Vegas strip show is the Masquerade in the Sky at The Rio, where sky-high dancers and pulsating music meet. Sci-fi loving, techno music fans will love that there’s no cover to get into Mandalay Bay’s Eyecandy Sound Lounge & Bar.

You may have heard that you can score free alcohol while gambling in any Las Vegas casino. Hello, that’s part of what makes Vegas travel so enticing! Even though the drinks are free, it is customary to tip the waitress $1, although if you tip $2 or more, you can rest assured you’ll get more free drinks than usual. If you want to save money, then try to avoid the clubs. Some good spots for hanging out and drinking lower-priced drinks include Canaval Court (Harrah’s), Margaritaville (Flamingo), Trader Vic’s (Miracle Mile Shops), ESPN Zone (New York-New York) and Slots of Fun. At Nine Fine Irishmen (New York-New York), you can find a pint of Guinness for $6 and The Bunkhouse in downtown Las Vegas is a cheap traveler’s bar just one block from the USA Hostel.

My Trip Back In Time

Filed Under Travel | Comments Off

Actually, this title’s misleading because it was not my trip at all, I’m a New Yorker, born and bred and proud of it. No, they’re my Dad’s roots. For many years now, he has been telling us of the times when his great, great grandpa arrived in America from Ireland. It was around 1850 and Ireland had been hit by the potato famine. The inhabitants of the Emerald Isle relied on the simple potato, not only as a staple food item but also as a crop that they exported to England. A type of potato blight affected the crop for several successive years and a million Irish people died from hunger and related diseases. Another million people left their homes and travelled to The United Stated, Canada and England to begin a new life.

I’m not aware if it was the Irish authorities trying to reduce the numbers of deaths over there or the ship owners happy to make a profit from misery but false promises were made to convonce people that they should start a new life in North America and the travellers suffered horrifying living conditions aboard those so-called “coffin ships”. I’ve seen estimates that a quarter of the travellers failed to finish that trip.

Great, great Grandpa was a battler and survived the trip. He settled here in New York and married a beautiful young woman from Poland and together they started the United States section of our family tree.

My dad was very keen to visit Ireland to try and find the tiny village in County Cork where great, great Grandpa had lived up till the famine. So, plans were drawn up, luggage was packed, flights were booked and the great trip back in time commenced.

We flew from JFK to Heathrow, London’s main international airport, and then took a bus to another of London’s airports, Gatwick. We had a flight booked to Cork early the following morning so had reserved a night at one of the hotels near to the airport ready for our early start. We spent the night at the Copthorne Hotel Gatwick which is about 10 minutes drive from Gatwick. What an excellent hotel it turned out to be. Set in stunningly beautiful grounds, it has been built around a farmhouse dating back to the 16th century. We had a marvellous time wandering around the hotel and its surroundings and eventually retired to our beds after enjoying a delightful meal washed down by a pint of warm beer (Yuck !).

The short hop to Ireland went smoothly and knowing that public transport is fairly sparse in the rural areas that we intended to visit we made the decision to rent a car from Cork airport. Within minutes we hit the open road and I now know the real meaning of such a phrase. Once out of the airport we were driving along deserted country roads where it was more likely to encounter a herd of cows in the road than another vehicle. Our initial destination was a little County Cork town called Mallow, which seemed to be the nearest one to the village that we were searching for. Following check-in at the hotel, we went for a walk hoping to meet some of the local people who would be willing to aid us in our quest.

In no time at all we were lucky enough to meet a delightful old man who was ready to give us the precise location of the village that we were looking for. Unfortunately, it had ben reduced to nothing more than a small clutch of ancient derelict farm workers dwellings; all humanity had left there many years before. It was heart breaking to realise that our journey had produced such pitiful results and we made our way back to the hotel with heavy hearts.

When booking the trip some weeks earlier we had been attracted to a hotel named the Springfort Hall which was a couple of miles outside Mallow. It turned out to be an excellent choice. The hotel was located in a secluded, wonderfully pretty country estate that was founded in 1169 during the Norman invasion. The actual hotel is the manor house dating back to the 18th century, an amazing building beautifully restored to its former elegance. Later that evening we were seated in the lounge bar learning to appreciate why people swear that Irish Guinness is different to any other variant found throughout civilization. We started chatting to a wonderful man called Seamus and it transpired that he was one of the officers of the local historical society. Without doubt he knew everything there was to know about Mallow and the surrounding area. He was aware of the deserted village that we’d seen that day and was able to tell my dad the complete story of how nearly 50% of the villagers passed away during the famine and those that remained left to begin a new life in another country. Seamus was so pleased to hear the tale of how great, great Grandpa had survived the trip to the United States and how the family had grown since that time. We enjoyed a delightful evening spellbound by the stories recounted to us and we were very unhappy to have to bid goodnight to our new found friend.

We had decided to leave Mallow the following day and to take a couple of days sightseeing around the South West of Ireland. Much to our delight, Seamus arrived early the next morning clutching a pile of magazines for my Dad. He told us that the historical society publishes an annual magazine and he was delivering at least a dozen previous issues as a gift for my Father. The journals are brim full of the history of Mallow and the surrounding areas and tears rolled down my Father’s cheeks as he thanked his new friend for that one gift that would bring him so much pleasure. We were forced to keep the magazines hidden in order to prevent my Father from reading every one of them before we were able to continue with our trip.

Weather From Russia – With Love

Snow Causes Traffic Chaos Across Britain

Severe weather in the UK has caused almost a complete breakdown of transport systems as many trains, buses and flights are cancelled. And met office forecasters have warned that more heavy snow is set to hit the British shores from Russia as the UK suffers its most severe winter for 13 years.

Met office forecasters have issued warnings that snowstorms from Russia, brewing over the north sea, will bring even more freezing temperatures, biting winds and snow. While the weather may improve for a while, forecasters are warning that more heavy snow can be expected this week.

The Automobile Association have warned people not to treat their cars as overcoats. If they break down or if the road ahead is blocked they will need to leave their vehicles and must make certain that they are wearing appropriate cold weather clothing, else they will risk hypothermia.

London and the Southeast of England have experienced the heaviest snow falls in the region for 20 years. London mayor, Boris Johnson, was forced to shut down the whole of the London bus network due to the effects of the severe winter weather. Disruption to public transport has led many people to work from home and lots of schools are still closed.

The worst snowstorm to hit London for 20 years has resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton. One of Heathrow airport’s runways was closed resulting in more than 650 flight cancellations. The outlook for travellers this week is continuing to look uncertain as forecasters predict even more snow storms.

The cancellation of many trains and buses is leading many to attempt to get to the airports by car. Freezing conditions are making driving treacherous, particularly on untreated local roads and hills. The roads are littered with abandoned cars, buses and trucks, some blocking carriageways.

Anyone who is hoping to fly from Heathrow or Gatwick is advised to contact their airport before leaving home. And if you are planning to take your car to the airport be sure to pre-book your Heathrow parking or Gatwick parking space in advance to be certain of a place.

The current advice is: ‘if your journey isn’t vital, stay at home’.
